- Completed research study focused on understanding the function of CD81, a tetraspanin protein, in immune responses through application of gene knockout approach, which resulted in discovery of CD81 null mice are deficient in Th2 type of immune responses and they fail to develop allergen-induced airway hyperreactivity (AHR) in a murine model of asthma, a Th2 dependent disease. By crossing CD81 null mice to antigen specific T cell receptor transgenic mice and to antigen specific B cell receptor transgenic mice, I further demonstrated that CD81 on T cells but not on B cells is essential for antigen specific T cell-B cell (antigen presenting cell) interaction. In vivo immunization, measurement of AHR, bronchoaveolar lavage, serum antibody ELISA, in vitro assay of antigen specific cellular immune responses, cell purification, in vitro T cell priming, and flow cytometer analysis used in these studies.

- Identified fundamental function of N-terminus of SPRR1 for the incorporation into cornified envelope through deletion and site directed mutation approaches.
- Examined the signaling pathways leading to the upregulation of SPRR1 and enhancement of cornification of airway epithelial cells treated with phorbol ester.
